Plot Summary
The film is a non-linear, multi-perspective mystery set in the small town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania.
The core mystery begins when all but one child from the same third-grade classroom mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly 2:17 a.m.
- The Characters: The story is told through the eyes of several interconnected, troubled residents:
- Justine Gandy (Julia Garner): The children’s teacher, who is placed on leave and immediately becomes a prime suspect.
- Archer (Josh Brolin): A grieving father of one of the missing boys, desperately searching for answers.
- Paul Morgan (Alden Ehrenreich): A police officer who gets personally entangled in the case.
- The Twist: As the different perspectives slowly come together, the community realizes the disappearance is not a simple kidnapping or local crime, but a terrifying supernatural conspiracy involving an ancient, life-draining ritual orchestrated by a mysterious woman named Gladys. The climax involves the missing children being turned into the “weapons” of the film’s title to confront the antagonist.
Reception
Weapons was a commercial success and was generally well-received by critics and horror fans alike. It was praised for its originality, unpredictability, and its ability to blend brutal horror with dark humor, similar to Cregger’s previous work.
